Background Up until the 2006 election, Bolivia was run by the wealthy from the eastern lowlands with most of the money and effort going into that area. The current President is of native descent and has begun to provide services and utilities to the Andean area. But this effort has only started. The residents of Azacilo are indigenous Aymaran peoples who live on subsistence farming. They have running water, but it was provided only recently and is not available in sufficient quantity. Sanitation and health education have not been part of their culture in the past. Biological needs are performed outdoors. |

Background
In 2005, the Sololá region of Guatemala was struck by Hurricane Stan. The hurricane devastated the region, wiping out entire villages and destroying infrastructure. Shortly after this, Heart to Heart International, a medical disaster response organization headquartered in Olathe, KS, went to Sololá to help. They provided medical aid and developed a strong relationship with the communities around Lake Atitlán in Sololá, Guatemala. After providing aid for some time, Heart to Heart wanted to begin fixing the water and sanitation systems in the schools so that many of the illnesses they were treating could be prevented. This is when they reached out to the Kansas City Professional Chapter of EWB (EWB-KC). The professional chapter then invited our student chapter to help out with the project. This partnership provides invaluable hands-on engineering experience to KU students while at the same time allowing them to network with Kansas City area professional engineers. |

Every year the KU School of Engineering hosts Engineering Expo for the local Lawrence community. According to KU's Engineering Student Council, “Engineering Expo is an annual student-organized event which is held during National Engineers' week. Since 1911, EXPO has strived to create excitement and interest in the fields of math, science, and engineering. During the two-day event, over 1000 students from elementary through high school will participate in design competitions, examine engineering organization displays, hear from an industry professional about engineering in the real world, and dive into interactive demonstrations. Each day of Engineering Expo is unique and focuses on a different audience.”
This year the theme for Expo is "Where in the World?". “Engineering is a global profession that seeks solutions to global problems. Whether it is infrastructure, medical advancements, clean energy, or innovative electronics, engineering has an impact on the lives of people across the globe. Engineering Expo 2010 focuses on this global interconnectedness and the global impact of engineering.” |
